Boundaries and Exceptions

  • Vehicles over 3.5t gross weight do not need a vignette but pay distance-based tolls.
  • Motorcycles require a separate motorcycle vignette (lower tariff).
  • Vehicles with foreign registration plates are subject to the same vignette rules.
  • Emergency vehicles (police, fire, ambulance) are exempt from vignette requirements.
  • Vehicles with disability passes may be exempt under certain conditions.
  • Certain federal roads are vignette-free – only motorways and expressways are toll-required.
  • The eVignette can be purchased up to 18 days before the validity start date.
  • An activated eVignette cannot be cancelled or transferred.

Purchase Process Step by Step

  1. 1. Determine vehicle class

    Car, motorcycle, or motorhome up to 3.5t?

  2. 2. Check trip duration

    10 days, 2 months, or full year?

  3. 3. Choose purchase channel

    Online (ASFINAG eShop), petrol station, motorway service area, or border crossing

  4. 4. Have registration plate ready

    For eVignette: enter registration plate correctly

  5. 5. Make payment

    Credit card, debit card, or cash (depending on channel)

  6. 6. Receive confirmation

    Email confirmation for eVignette, receipt for in-person purchase

  7. 7. Affix sticker vignette

    Bottom left of windscreen, from inside

  8. 8. Check validity

    Verify date and registration plate are correct
